Funeral sermon and translation, 1796-1838.

A ms. funeral sermon delivered upon the occasion of the removal of the ashes of Christopher Columbus from Santo Domingo to Havana, Cuba, 19 Jan 1796. In Spanish. A letter bound into the volume from John Lowell explains that the ms. is a gift to the Massachusetts Historical Society from George Knight, merchant in Havana and former resident of Newburyport, Mass. The collection includes an English translation of the sermon (1838), completed under the supervision of historian William Hickling Prescott.

Christopher Columbus was likely born in October 1451 in Genoa, Republic of Genoa. His name in Ligurian is Cristoffa Corombo. In one of his writings, he says he went to sea at the age of 10. In 1473, Columbus began his apprenticeship as business agent for the important Centurione, Di Negro and Spinola families of Genoa.
